I just read this BBC article and this CNN article concerning the announcement by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) that it would now take smoking into account along with sex, violence and adult language when classifying movies. I was interested because both the script I finished in April and the one I am currently working on involve characters that smoke.
What are your thoughts about the announcement?

I guess what they say is true, a cigarette is just a smaller version of a penis. Hence the R rating vs. NC-17.
This is just ridiculous.
Sure you can depict violence and still get a PG-13. But smoking? Yeah that will scar you.
Growing up with smokers, and seeing various family members killed off by smoking-related illness (cancer, etc) I say go for it.
I don't care very much since I mainly write R-Rated movies.
what's next? no more booze or bar scenes, no gangsta rap in comedies, no people riding bicycles without helmets... it just keeps going on and on, we are automatons
Btw, I don't think it matters much what the MPAA says about smoking when you write a script with characters smoking. The studio bosses, producers and readers won't give a crap about that as long as your scripts are great. If they think your script should be shot for a PG-13 audience, they will just change it.
I think that bumping up a movie's rating based on smoking is crazy.
